My first day!!!
20 augustus 2015 - Alnwick, Verenigd Koninkrijk
The big day was finally here! One that I dreaded as much as looked forward to (well, maybe it wasn't entirely equal). My flight was at 8:25 so I had to be at the airport at 6:30, which meant getting up at 3:30. I was extremely grateful that Jasper and my mom were willing to drop me off at Schiphol, instead of me having to take the train all alone with my early morning grumpy face. Before today I'd never flown all by myself, and I was terrified that I'd mess up somehow. I'm very glad to say I didn't and I got to Newcastle surprisingly quickly (50 minute journey) and in one piece. Two train journeys later, I was in Alnmouth. Alnmouth Central is the closest train station to Alnwick. I was lucky to have a roommate, George, who was willing to pick me up there, as it takes about 3 times as long when you travel by bus.
When we got home, George quickly showed me the house and my room, and then headed back to work (he's head chef at a local restaurant). He would be back at around 15:00, and had kindly offered to drive me to a grocery store and show me around town a bit. In the meantime I took my time unpacking my suitcase and giving my new room a few personal touches. I already felt very homesick and sad looking at all the pictures I brought with me. When I'd done my grocies, George drove me around town a little bit, which really cheered me up. He's very nice and easy going, which made it a lot easier on me. He also showed me Alnwick Castle, which is beautiful! I can't wait to see the inside as well.
After we got back, George had to get back to work for his second shift. My optimism and enthusiasm quickly made way for more sadness. I don't think I've ever cried so much in my life as I did today. It just made me very sad to be all alone so far away from home, while knowing that I wouldn't see Jasper again for more than a month. Luckily there's such a thing as Skype. After talking to my mom and to Jasper for a bit, I already felt better. I suppose it's very important for me to keep my eye on the ball and focus on why I'm here, instead of what I miss back home.
All in all, not the happiest and most positive first blog entry you can imagine, but we'll get there. Right now, I'm just happy to be able to put on my pyjamas and go to sleep in my new bed.
Good night!

Volgende week ergens? We zien het wel.
Lieve groeten vanuit De Achterhoek.
Wij.
"Wij" dat zijn je opa en ik.
Accoord?
